Capital Initiatives

The following capital initiatives are priorities for the U's continued excellence:

Beverley Taylor Sorenson Arts and Education Complex

The Beverley Taylor Sorenson Arts and Education Complex at the University of Utah will support five main activities: academic research; interdisciplinary pre-service teacher and arts specialist training; professional development for teachers and education leaders; programming for schools, youth and families; and community involvement and leadership. The collaborative efforts housed in the new Complex will be guided by a newly created national Center for Integrating Arts into Academic Learning, guided jointly by the Colleges of Education and Fine Arts, which will coordinate and promote all key activities. The Colonnade at the University of Utah

The Offices of Student Affairs and Undergraduate Studies are working to raise funds to renovate Building 605 in historic Fort Douglas to create “The Colonnade at the University of Utah”, a building that will house two wings: “The Honors House at the Colonnade” and “The Welcome Center at the Colonnade”. This building is envisioned as the centerpiece of student life for both entering and current students at the university. It will become the gem in the center of an academic village created by the restoration of Fort Douglas, with student housing to its immediate east, the Lassonde Student Center to the north, the Honors Center to the southwest, Chapel Glen to the west, and the Honors Houses on Officer’s Circle to its south. When complete, the Colonnade will become the new front door for every prospective student and parent at the University of Utah. Huntsman Cancer Hospital Phase II-B

Huntsman Cancer Foundation seeks support to fund the growth of Huntsman Cancer Hospital in honor of Jon M. and Karen Huntsman. The hospital quickly reached capacity since opening its doors in 2004. As the only National Cancer Institute-designated cancer specialty hospital in the Intermountain West, Huntsman Cancer Hospital’s excellent service to the country’s largest geographic area fills a critical need. Every day, on average, our hospital physicians see 26 new patients, 31 people are admitted to the hospital, 10 surgeries are performed, and 116 patients are treated with radiation therapy. College of Pharmacy

The College of Pharmacy’s vision for sustaining its internationally recognized research programs is a new 150,000 square foot research facility that will bring our students and faculty back together again. Currently they are located in six different buildings that make collaboration and team-based research difficult. This new facility will be joined with Skaggs Hall by an atrium that will celebrate the legacy of Mr. L. S. Skaggs. To learn more about the College of Pharmacy’s Vision for the Future, click here.

College of Science

Enhanced laboratory and educational space is essential to attracting top researchers and engaging our best students. The College of Science at the University of Utah is developing two significant structures, the Chemistry Building Annex and the George Thomas Building Renovation, to make these goals reality. Student Housing

There is a growing demand from parents and students for a new kind of education that has higher expectations. Many employers are calling for a practical education that increases students’ capacities for dealing with a rapidly changing world. They emphasize teamwork and collaboration and developing problem-solving skills rather than memorization and accumulation of facts that will soon become obsolete. Often referred to as “lifelong learning” or “deep learning,” these capacities have become imperative in our rapidly changing society. To support and enhance deep learning, the proposed student housing will be a transformative experience for freshman Honors students. A sense of community is a critical factor not only for academic achievement but also impacts the overall satisfaction of the college experience. The Student Life Center

The Student Life Center plays an integral role in the vision for the University of Utah as a living and learning community. Located at the heart of campus, to the west of the George S. Eccles 2002 Legacy Bridge and adjacent to student housing, the Student Life Center will be the hub for campus social life where students connect with other students as well as faculty and staff from throughout campus. These connections are integral to a vibrant academic and social life at the University as students make meaningful friendships that extend beyond the classroom and into the very fabric of their lives as students and alumni of the University of Utah.
